Today marks the fifth anniversary of the neo-Nazi terrorist attack on two Ōtautahi Christchurch mosques on March 15, 2019. The shooter, Australian man Brenton Tarrant, murdered 51 people and injured 40 during Friday prayers at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre.
Our thoughts are with the victims and survivors of these attacks, their whānau and loved ones, and the Muslim community across Aotearoa New Zealand, and Australia. 51 shuhada rose that day, massacred at prayer and martyred for their faith and many, for their ethnicity.
Combating violent extremism and terrorism is impossible without building from the firm foundation of equality fundamental to the women’s rights and human rights movements.
At Glitterpill LLC and The Khalifa Ihler Institute, we define violent extremism as the violent denial of diversity. The only way to fight against this denial is to genuinely embrace diversity. Our organizations do this throughout our work and presence in our sector.

Rinaldo Nazzaro, the founder of the Neo-Nazi terror group ‘The Base,’ is a persistent man. Persistence is one of Nazzaro’s few redeeming qualities. He is a terrible judge of character, allowing multiple antifascist spies and undercover federal agents to infiltrate The Base over the years. He has promoted unhinged homicidal maniacs like Justen Watkins (AK) and Luke Austin Lane (TMB) into administrative roles. His manner of speaking is rambling and monotone, making him an uninspiring commanding officer for his troops.
