This August, two young girls and two adults were murdered at a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance event in Southport, UK. Shortly after that, Swift canceled three arena shows in Vienna due to a terrorist bomb threat from Islamic extremists. The freedom, joy, female camaraderie, and independence that Taylor Swift's concerts represent are thorns in the side of extremists.
Humane Intelligence, a nonprofit organization dedicated to evaluating the societal impact of AI, has teamed up with Nordic counterterrorism group Revontulet to launch Bias Bounty 2, the second of 10 algorithmic bias bounty challenges, unfolding over the next year. This latest challenge focuses on counterterrorism in computer vision (CV) applications and will run from Thursday, September 26, 2024, to Thursday, November 7, 2024. The winners will share $10,000 in prizes and may have their work considered for Revontulet’s solutions suite.
On Monday, July 29th, we were left devastated by the brutal knife attack that cost the lives of three children in Southport and left several others in critical condition. The motive of the attacker remains unknown. What is known is that he targeted young girls who were celebrating life and friendship while dancing to Taylor Swift's music.
Thirteen years ago, 77 people were killed in the 2011 Utøya/Oslo terrorist attack in Norway. These days toward the end of July will always carry the weight of that day, of the trauma, pain, and damage caused, and of the memory of those we lost.
It is in their honor and in honor of all those who struggle to live on after terrorist attacks around the world we continue to fight back - to build the conditions for communities resilient to radicalization and to detect and disrupt terrorist activities.
This May, Revontulet was pleased to exhibit some of our recent work at the 2024 Canada Centre on Countering Radicalization to Violence’s Megaweek conference, where 400 academics, government experts, tech leaders, and frontline practitioners from 20 countries came together to discuss how to keep our communities safe.
To reflect our growth, global reach, evolution, and the timeless nature of our work, we will continue under a name that better speaks to who we are and aspire to be. We searched for a timeless name that spans cultures and doesn't tie us to a specific era, language, or ideology — a name that could grow with us, that encapsulates the global nature of our work, and that we could imbue with meaning as we evolve and continue to push the envelope.
The name we chose is Revontulet.
On March 8th, 2024, Ireland held a dual referendum in which the Irish people voted on the modification of two constitutional articles. This insight will examine how the far-right leveraged the issues discussed in the referendum, utilizing disinformation to advance their own narratives.
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the neo-Nazi terrorist attack on two Ōtautahi Christchurch mosques on March 15, 2019. The shooter, Australian man Brenton Tarrant, murdered 51 people and injured 40 during Friday prayers at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre.
Our thoughts are with the victims and survivors of these attacks, their whānau and loved ones, and the Muslim community across Aotearoa New Zealand, and Australia. 51 shuhada rose that day, massacred at prayer and martyred for their faith and many, for their ethnicity.
Combating violent extremism and terrorism is impossible without building from the firm foundation of equality fundamental to the women’s rights and human rights movements.
At Glitterpill LLC and The Khalifa Ihler Institute, we define violent extremism as the violent denial of diversity. The only way to fight against this denial is to genuinely embrace diversity. Our organizations do this throughout our work and presence in our sector.
Our latest insight is investigating the far-right scene in Quebec. It examines the intersect between the group Catholic Society of St.Pius X (SSPX) an ultra-traditionalist group originating in the 1960s and the new group Nouvelle Alliance. Nouvelle Alliance is an identitarian, ethnographic-nationalist organization, although standing on their own, Glitterpill analysts have tracked overlaps between the two groups and provides evidence of the influence of ultra-traditional catholic groups on the far-right scene in Quebec.
Glitterpill analysts have examined the content from Justin Mohn’s recently deleted Youtube video and have provided analysis and possible implications for social media platforms and their guidelines.
Gliterpill’s analysts are monitoring an escalating security threat involving the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group, whose leaders have targeted Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Tensions have escalated in the wake of the October 7th terrorist attack perpetrated against Israel by Hamas.
An announcement by the leader of Yemen's Houthi rebels on October 24th 2023, declared intentions to intensify attacks against Israel, including targeting Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
On the 23rd of November, a stabbing incident occurred outside Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuirel on Parnell Street in Dublin City centre. Five people were injured in the attack, three of those being children, the youngest victim was 5 years old. There have been no updates on the motive of the perpetrator, but the Gardaí don’t believe that it is terror-related. The assailant is reported to have Irish citizenship and has been residing in Ireland for over 20 years. Later in the evening following the incident, there were riots in Dublin City Centre that were instigated by far-right extremist groups in Ireland.

In late September several members of the Glitterpill team took part in the Eradicate Hate Global Summit in Pittsburgh.
Eradicate Hate was established in the aftermath of the antisemitic October 27, 2018 shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh where eleven lives were taken. During the summit, we had the honor of connecting with several survivors of the attack, and survivors and individuals affected by extremism and hate from around the globe.
Ireland is witnessing a stark rise in far-right extremism. One prime example of this has been the recent spate of attacks against libraries in Ireland.
The Khalifa Ihler Institute with the support of Internet NZ and Glitterpill LLC are proud to announce the release of the Aotearoa New Zealand Hate Map Report.
The report highlights the impact events and incidents driven by hate, and hate speech have on marginalized communities. It sheds light on the urgent need for awareness, education, and dialogue to combat this growing issue.

Rinaldo Nazzaro, the founder of the Neo-Nazi terror group ‘The Base,’ is a persistent man. Persistence is one of Nazzaro’s few redeeming qualities. He is a terrible judge of character, allowing multiple antifascist spies and undercover federal agents to infiltrate The Base over the years. He has promoted unhinged homicidal maniacs like Justen Watkins (AK) and Luke Austin Lane (TMB) into administrative roles. His manner of speaking is rambling and monotone, making him an uninspiring commanding officer for his troops.

While the recent Proud Boys' convictions are seen as a symbolic win by some in the general public, they are being viewed in pro-Trump spaces as a call to action, with the group now having more to add to their canon of “martyrs”.
Glitterpill’s informal slogan is “You moved fast and broke things. We’re here to help you fix it.” Our team feels it is worth examining Musk’s actions over the past couple of weeks as a lens to view social media companies’ values as they intersect with stakeholders’ concerns about where the tears in the social fabric have occurred and what we can do to repair them.
